I don't wetsand base makes a hell of a mess to try to clean up not to mention that I paint the cars I do in several pieces The sanding of the clear is about the same as I do cut it flat with 600 or 800 and then work my way up from that to the final DA sanding with a foam 3000 grit wetsanding pad
Edit: kinda missed the point you asked about in between coats = dry sand Wet sanding is only (as far as I know) to bring the final finish up to a mirror finish You dry sand up to like 1000 or more then go to wet sand then use even finer rubbing compounds on a buffer
